On Friday, 11 October, the symposium "Adaptive Re-Use" will take place at the Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences. On the basis of examples from the European area, strategies for dealing with large residential buildings and settlement structures from the period 1945 - 1975 will be discussed.

In prospering regions, the pressure on the housing market is particularly high; the search for space resources to cover the rapidly increasing demand for housing is fierce. With a view to inner development, the focus is on post-war modern settlements in particular, as they have the potential for post-war densification due to their usually low structural density. As a result, there is a danger that characteristic features of settlements with their characteristic open space structures will be lost. Although some of the settlements are generally regarded as worth preserving, there is often no ensemble or monument protection (yet) that could ensure careful handling of the urban structures. The aim of the event is to present how settlements in different countries are protected as historical monuments, what role architecture plays in their preservation and how the existing settlement can be further developed in a qualified manner.
